The schipperke is a small dog with a thick double coat and a ruff around his neck. The body is short and compact and should look square when viewed from side. When viewed in silhouette, the topline appears to slope gently down from the withers. The chest should be wide and should reach to the elbows. The head is shaped like a fox´s - a wedge with a pointed muzzle. It has a wide, slightly rounded forehead. The small oval eyes are dark brown with and alert expression. The small, erect ears are triangular in shape. They born without tail, the tail could be docked (in some countries only) or live with tail. The only acceptable color according to the standard is totally black.
The schipperke was bred in Flanders. It became a favourite choice to guard canal barges in Belgium. The breed became very popular in Belgian households by late 1800´s. It first appeared at a dog show in 1880.
The schipperke is quick, energic little dog. Hot-tempered, high-spirited, self-confident and protective. They are wary of strangers and may seem somewhat aloof, but are actually very devoted and loyal, especially with children. Schipperke will defends its territory. Schipperke is usually easy to train as it is inteligent and eager to learn. It is lovely companion dog, well in agility.
We choose schipperke for our seven years old son Jirka. Fortunatelly in September 2003 a six months old bitch came on oue home. Bess was born in the schipperke kennel 'od Prachovskych skal' owned by our friend Vlasta Brezinova. Our son Jirka care about Bess very well. She went to the summer training camp with us.
